The McIntire Department of Music is pleased to present the inaugural University of Virginia Flute Forum, taking place on Sunday, January 24, 2016. The UVA Flute Forum is a day-long flute festival which features masterclasses, workshops, and recitals. All events are free and open to the public.

This year's Forum will feature Aaron Goldman, Principal Flutist of the National Symphony Orchestra, alongside guest artists Angela Kelly, Abby Simoneau, and UVA faculty member Kelly Sulick. Attendees are encouraged to bring their flutes to participate in a flute choir reading session, led by conductor Kyle Ruempler. The full schedule is listed below.

Featured Guest Artists

Aaron Goldman

Aaron Goldman, Principal Flute of the National Symphony Orchestra since January 2013, joined the NSO as Assistant Principal Flute in September 2006. Prior to joining the NSO, he was Principal Flute of the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra and has performed as guest principal with the Baltimore Symphony.

An active soloist and chamber musician, Mr. Goldman has performed concertos with the National Symphony, Amadeus Chamber Orchestra, Virginia Chamber Orchestra, Orlando Philharmonic, the Chamber Orchestra of Florida, and has performed at several National Flute Association’s annual conventions. He appears as part of the Kennedy Center Chamber Players, and is active in NSO In Your Neighborhood, the NSO’s signature community engagement project. He has also performed with the Eclipse Chamber Orchestra, the National Chamber Players, the 21st Century Consort, the Smithsonian Chamber Orchestra, and participated in many educational programs with the NSO, including performances in the Family and Terrace Theaters. He has given lectures at the Carnegie Institute, and the Smithsonian Institution, such as “The Magical Flute” and “Math and Music: Closer Than You Think” alongside former NSO cellist Yvonne Caruthers.

Mr. Goldman received his Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY and is on the faculty of the University of Maryland.


Kyle Ruempler

Kyle Ruempler has been a conductor of the Rapidan Orchestra, a community orchestra based in Gordonsville, VA, since its inception in Fall 2014.

Kyle received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music and Studio Art at the University of Virginia, where he studied under Kate Tamarkin, the Music Director of the Charlottesville Symphony. His conducting experiences include being a Drum Major for the Cavalier Marching Band, Pit Orchestra Director for First Year Players, and as a workshop participant with Kirk Trevor, guest directing the Astoria Symphony Orchestra. Kyle also performed as a trumpet player during his undergraduate career as a member of the UVA Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, and Cavalier Marching Band/Basketball Band.

Kyle continues to work and perform at UVA, playing trumpet with the Charlottesville Symphony and working as the Administrative Assistant and Graduate Program Coordinator for the McIntire Department of Music. He is currently applying to Master’s of Music programs in Orchestral Conducting.


Kelly Sulick

Kelly Sulick currently teaches at the University of Virginia and serves as Principal Flute in the Charlottesville Symphony and as Director of the University of Virginia Chamber Music Series. Prior to her appointment, she served as Principal Flute with the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra and as Consortium Instructor of Flute at the University of Evansville for three years. She earned her Master of Music degree in Flute Performance from the University of Southern California, during which she completed three seasons as principal flute with the Young Musicians Foundation Debut Orchestra in Los Angeles, California. Prior to her graduate studies, she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Flute Performance and a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Language and Literature from the University of Michigan, where she graduated with highest honors and was named a James B. Angell Scholar for her academic achievements.

Ms. Sulick won second place in the 2010 National Flute Association's Young Artist Competition, and was awarded the prize for the best performance of Kristin P. Kuster's "Perpetual Afternoon." She has been a finalist or semi-finalist in numerous national competitions, including The Flute Society of Kentucky Young Artist Competition, the University of Michigan Concerto Competition, the Pasadena Showcase House Instrumental Competition, the Young Musicians Foundation National Debut Competition, and the Frank Bowen Young Artist Competition. Ms. Sulick has recorded several compact discs, including William Bolcom's Songs of Innocence and of Experience under Leonard Slatkin, a Naxos release that received four Grammy awards including Best Classical Album. Her principal teachers include Marina Piccinini, Amy Porter, and Jim Walker.
