UVA Chamber Music Series - Concert 4
On Sunday February 27th, at 3:30pm the UVA Chamber Music Series will present their first concert of 2022 in Old Cabell Hall on the historic Lawn at the Univeristy of Virginia.
The concert starts with Sergei Prokofiev’s Quintet in G minor, Op.39. It is a unique instrument setting piece of chamber music for Oboe; Kelly Peral, Clarinet; Jiyeon Choi, Violin; Dan Sender, Viola; Ayn Balija and Double bass; Peter Sparr. It contains 6 movements, but the group will omit the 4th movement. Prokofiev wrote the quintet alongside his commissioned ballet work, Trapeze. The quintet contains dance features such as sharply accented rhythms and a circus-style mood. The quintet is one of Prokofiev’s most challenging works for both performers and listeners. I. I. Martinov, in his article on Soviet Chamber Music cites the quintet’s “fondness for harsh and rigid harmonic complexes,” “complicated melodic phrases superimposed one above the other,” and “intricate rhythmic patterns.”
Paganini’s 3 Duets for Violin and Bassoon No.3 will be performed by Elizabeth Roberts, Bassoon and Dan Sender, Violin. Paganini composed three duets for violin and bassoon, and this is the last of those works.
Lastly, Nathaniel Lee, Trombone and John Nye, Trumpet will perform Le Nozze de Figaro from Operatic Duets by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. This piece is comprised of famous duets from The Marriage of Figaro.
Tickets for all concerts are $15 general admission, $8 for students, and are free for UVA students who reserve in advance and for those under 18. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Arts Box Office at 434.924.3376, or by visiting artsboxoffice.virginia.edu. To see all concerts in the series, please visit https://music.virginia.edu/uvacms
