Verge Ensemble
‘Pushing sound right to the edge’ Washington Post

The McIntire Department of Music and the Virginia Center for Computer Music are proud to host Washington DC’s VERGE Ensemble as our Spring 2011 ensemble in residence. For almost 40 years VERGE has delighted audiences with the best of contemporary art music at prominent venues including the National Gallery of Art, the Library of Congress, Issue Project Room and Le Poisson Rouge. In recent years VERGE has served as resident ensemble for the prestigious June-in-Buffalo festival, and the noted Cleveland State Residency Program.

Their Charlottesville show presents specially-composed works by students of the doctoral program in Composition and Computer Technology. This impressive group of young composers have presented their work at prestigious conferences and festivals including the International Computer Music Conference, Sundance Film Festival, and Gaudeamus Music Week, as well as residencies at Atlantic Center for the Arts, Crater Lake National Park in Oregon, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve in Alaska, and Acadia National Park in Maine.

The varied and engaging program features unique generative animated scores (projected on screen for the audience), multi-media story telling based on Celtic myths of the sea, an intense meditation on tuning, an exploration of group dynamics, slowly unfolding layers of sound inspired by flight, and an intriguing sonic portrayal of Alaskan glacial environments.
