The Virginia Gentlemen, the oldest a cappella ensemble at the University of Virginia, will celebrate their 60th Anniversary with a concert in Old Cabell Hall auditorium on Saturday, April 13th, 2013 at 9:30 pm.

The Virginia Gentlemen 60th Anniversary Concert is a celebration of a UVA institution that since 1953 has represented the University—both domestically and internationally—through brotherhood and music. Held in the premier music hall of the University of Virginia, the Virginia Gentlemen 60th Anniversary Concert will showcase not only the varied pop repertoire of the contemporary Virginia Gentlemen, but will also feature music sung by alums from every generation of the group’s 60-year history. From prominent pop singles of the last few years to exciting cultural ballads of days gone by, the Virginia Gentlemen promise a vibrant and enriching a cappella experience that will entertain patrons of all ages.

The 2012-2013 season has proved to have many exciting new developments for the 17-member Virginia Gentlemen. The group’s newest album, Guys in Ties, was released for sale the night of the Family Weekend Concert last semester. Since then, the album has sold hundreds of copies and has been recognized for various awards, including receiving a CARA nomination for “Best Collegiate Male Solo” and being featured on BOCA 2013: Best of College A Cappella. The group’s first CD in many years, Guys in Ties contains several covers of today’s most prominent pop songs. Guys in Ties is available for sale online at www.thevirginiagentlemen.com, on iTunes, and in stores throughout the Charlottesville community.

In addition to the release of Guys in Ties, the Virginia Gentlemen undertook their 2013 International Tour from March 5 – 24 this year, travelling as far as Singapore, Bangkok, Saigon, and Hong Kong. While abroad, the group represented the University at several performances for UVA alums and supporters. This trip abroad comes on the heels of the group’s two recent invitations to perform at the White House for the holiday and Inaugural seasons in December and January.

The Virginia Gentlemen were founded in 1953 as an octet of the Virginia Glee Club. For over 30 years, the Virginia Gentlemen performed with the Glee Club until officially breaking off in 1987 to form the independent group that exists today. In recent years, the group has travelled to Panama, Australia, and China and was invited by the White House to perform for President and Mrs. Obama at a holiday reception in December of 2011.
