The McIntire Department of Music and The Bridge PAI present the March installment of the Telemetry Series at 8pm on Friday, March 20th, 2020. The event will feature music by Lee Bidgood, and The Withues. The Telemetry Series, supported by UVA Arts and the Office of the Provost and the Vice Provost for the Arts is always free and open to the public.
Dr. Lee Bidgood is an ethnomusicologist, musician, and associate professor in the Department of Appalachian Studies at East Tennessee State University. His 2017 book “Czech Bluegrass: Notes From the Heart of Europe” and the documentary film “Banjo Romantika” are results of his research in the Czech Republic. A former member of the Steep Canyon Rangers, his musical work now includes square dance fiddling, viola da gamba consorts, baroque violin, and leading a mandolin orchestra.
Emily Bidgood is a musician, dancer, and dance caller who grew up in central Virginia. She became interested in square dancing and percussive solo dance that are a part of the regional traditions of the southeastern United States, and was a part of the Apple Chill Cloggers dance group from 2007-2009, performing at regional events and touring internationally.
The Withues are a ridiculous duo.
Fred McGann is a venerable experimental musician with joyful twisted roots (Davey Williams, Ornette Coleman); Cath Monnes is a local fool with wide open thankful ears.
We were part of a rock band (Fred was The White Man, I was A Liquid Woman) for many years many years ago
Some years later we played a soulful set mostly on ironing boards at Tokyo Rose in it's epic years
This sweet rare reunion for me probably an ode to labor & delivery & jubilation
Completely common but absolutely singular
Fred always delights and surprises me so if he didn't surprise me I'd be really surprised
