Lee Bidgood will give a colloquium on Friday, March 20th at 3:30pm in Old Cabell room 107. The event is free and open to the public.

Lee Bidgood is on the faculty of East Tenessee State University, where he teaches lessons and coaches bluegrass and old time string bands, and leads the ETSU Mandolin Orchestra.  He has taught "Bluegrass History I-II," "Survey of Contemporary Bluegrass," "Bluegrass and America's Music," "Ethnomusicology in Appalachia," "Research Methods for Appalachian Studies" as well as two study abroad courses.

Lee is interested in the making of bluegrass, old-time, country, and early music. He received his doctorate in Critical and Comparative Studies in Music from the University of Virginia; since then his writing has been published in "Lide/Město," "The International Country Music Journal," Popular Music and Society, The New Encyclopedia of Southern Culture, The Encyclopedia of Appalachia, and the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. His book "Czech Bluegrass: Notes From the Heart of Europe" was released by the University of Illinois Press in 2017.  Lee's research has been supported by two Fulbright grants, a Presidential Fellowship (UVA), a FLAS summer fellowship, and two major RDC grants from ETSU. He has presented his work to the Appalachian Studies Association, the Society of Ethnomusicology, the American Musicological Society, the International Council for Traditional Music, and the International Country Music Conference. With filmmaker Shara Lange, Bidgood co-produced Banjo Romantika (2013), a full-length documentary film about Czech bluegrass.

Lee has performed on mandolin and fiddle as an early member of North Carolina bands the Steep Canyon Rangers and Big Fat Gap; he has played viola da gamba and baroque strings with academic and professional early music groups. He has toured internationally and recorded with Roll's Boys, G-Runs and Roses, Martin Žák, and Four Brothers.

Old Cabell Hall is located on the south end of UVA's historic lawn, directly opposite the Rotunda. Parking is available in the central grounds parking garage on Emmet Street, in the C1 parking lot off McCormick Rd, and in the parking lots at the UVA Corner. Handicap parking is available in the small parking lot adjacent to Bryan Hall.
