UVA Students in Hungary
UVA in Hungary: Spring 2026 Embedded Study Abroad - Applications due November 1st!

UVA in Hungary: Experiencing Hungarian Music and Cultural History, UVA's only arts-focused study abroad program, will be offered again for Spring 2026. This course will investigate the often-overlooked riches of Central European history, culture, and the arts. With Hungary as a focal point, students will participate in 6 on-Grounds seminar sessions that will provide both context and a foretaste of the main event: a weeklong trip to Budapest and Pécs!

Program Highlights:
  • Welcome dinner with live folk band performance overlooking the Danube river.
  • Guided tours and visits to Budapest’s major cultural sites, including the Hungarian National Gallery, Parliament, and Liszt Academy.
  • Excursion to Pécs (“PAY-tch”) and the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter.
  • World-class opera and/or symphony performances.

The deadline to apply is November 1. Contact Professor Daniel Sender (dls8k@virginia.edu) or Raven Showalter (ras8fe@virginia.edu) from the ISO office with any questions.

Quotes from past students:
"It was SO much fun to be able to experience Hungarian art, music, and overall culture with the help of Professor Sender and our tour guides. I truly learned so much about the culture and could not have had a better time. I didn't know anything about Hungarian culture before going on this trip, but feel so inspired to go back with my family and show them my experiences."

"As a musician at UVA, I enjoyed being able to visit the University of Pécs and Liszt Academy to engage with other students and professionals of music. It was a true benefit to see where and how they studied their craft and to learn from them as well as perform for their communities."

"The program in Hungary was truly a highlight of my undergraduate years at UVA. I didn’t even know that spring embedded opportunities existed so I was ecstatic to have been able to participate. Budapest is an incredible place with an amazing history and worthwhile sites. I especially enjoyed interacting with other musicians in Budapest and Pécs, and learning about their cultural practices. For just a week long program, I really gained some valuable perspectives and simply had an amazing time! The professors were the cherry-on-top of a great trip!"

The cultural splendors of Hungary await your exploration!
