The University of Virginia McIntire Department of Music presents a distinguished major recital of compositions by Benjamin Yobp on Sunday, April 25th, at 8 pm in the Old Cabell Hall Auditorium. The recital, which will feature original works for piano and strings performed by UVA students, is free and open to the public.
Benjamin Yobp is a fourth year Music major and Biology minor. He began composing when he was eight, which was around the same time that he began playing the piano. For ten years he took piano lessons with Elizabeth Sjolund in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and he has studied with Kelly Gross at UVA since he was a first year. Benjamin won the National Guild of Piano Teachers’ International Composition Contest in 2005, was a finalist in 2006 and 2004, and received honorable mentions in 2003 and 2000. In 2006 he participated in a piano performance master class with Harold Protsman.
This recital is supported by the Charles S. Roberts Scholarship Fund. Established in 2004 by the generosity of Mr. Alan Y. Roberts ('64) and Mrs. Sally G. Roberts, the Charles S. Roberts Scholarship Fund underwrites the private lessons and recital costs for undergraduate music majors giving a recital in their fourth year as part of a distinguished major program in music.
