About the Program

Music Director Benjamin Rous opens his 10th Anniversary Season with a program that spans a century of musical adventure. Violinist David Sariti takes center stage in Vaughan Williams’ Violin Concerto, composed in 1924–25, which combines neo-Baroque tendencies with the composer’s distinctive pastoral English violin writing. Before that, Ravel’s “Five O’clock Foxtrot,” a playful, jazz-inspired ragtime sequence from the opera L’enfant et les sortilèges, and Ligeti’s Atmosphères, a piece dense in mesmerizing sound textures. The concert culminates in Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite, whose score blends Russian folklore with the composer’s famed orchestral wizardry.
