UVA Early Music Ensemble - Fall 2021

November 20, 2021 - 2:00pm
Old Cabell Hall
Tickets are $10 for the general public, $9 for UVA Faculty and Staff, $5 for students and free for UVA Students who reserve in advance

The University of Virginia Department of Music is proud to present the Early Music Ensemble on Saturday, November 20th at 2:00pm in Old Cabell Hall.

The UVA Early Music Ensemble, led by faculty violinist David Sariti, presents a varied program of (mostly) 17th-century works, all using period instruments and performance practices.  Students learn to use instruments and musicianship of the period, and follow historic precedent by performing without a conductor.  The ensemble's educational mission extends to the audience, who is encouraged to come and discover these wonderful and unfamiliar works.

The Early Music Ensemble presents dynamic, vital performances of music from the 17th and 18th centuries with the instruments and performance practices for which it was written, without a conductor.  The experience will challenge preconceived notions of music performance, and build musicianship and listening skills. Period instruments at Baroque pitch from the University’s extensive collection are used, and students receive personal instruction on their specific techniques.

Recent guest coaches have included Grammy award-winning Quicksilver, The Vivaldi Project, University of Michigan harpsichordist Joseph Gascho, and others. More recently, the guest artist was fortepianist David Breitman, director of the Historical Performance program at Oberlin College. The Weber guest for Spring 2022 will be historical clarinetist Dominic Giardino of Colonial Williamsburg, who will perform a program of early Classical-period music with the ensemble on Friday, April 1st, 2022 at 8pm in Old Cabell Hall.

Tickets are $10 for the general public, $9 for UVA Faculty and Staff, $5 for students and free for UVA Students who reserve in advance. Tickets can be purchased at the Arts Box Office by calling 434.924.3376 or visiting www.artsboxoffice.virginia.edu.
