The University of Virginia McIntire Department of Music presents the UVA Chamber Singers directed by Michael Slon on Friday, November 22nd, 2013 at 8pm in Old Cabell Hall.

The UVa Chamber Singers invite the UVa and Charlottesville communities to a free concert on Friday, November 22nd, at 8:00 pm at Old Cabell Hall on the grounds of the University of Virginia.  The UVa ensemble’s fall 2013 program is an “Abendlied” – an evening of German song, including choral works by Brahms, Mendelssohn, and Schubert interspersed with solos and duets by the talented members of the Singers.  In addition, coming exactly on the 50th anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the concert will also offer a special musical tribute to JFK. 

Founded in 2005 and led by UVa faculty conductor Michael Slon, the UVa Chamber Singers is a select ensemble drawn from the University Singers, and performs a wide variety of music for chamber choir ranging from early music to contemporary compositions.  Recent performances have included Britten’s Hymn to St. Cecilia, Vivaldi’s Magnificat, Whitacre’s Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine, Allegri’s Miserere, Bach’s Mass in B minor with the University Singers, standards by Harold Arlen, Jerome Kern, George Gershwin, and the Beatles, and new music by Meredith Monk (with the Meredith Monk Vocal Ensemble) and Matthew Burtner.  In 2010, the Chamber Singers made their first appearances at the Staunton Music Festival, including a performance with Grammy-award winning baritone Kevin McMillan.  In the spring of 2012, they participated in a workshop with Peter Phillips, director of the world famous Tallis Scholars, and in fall 2012 collaborated with Three Notch’d Road, Charlottesville’s professional Baroque ensemble. 

Old Cabell Hall is located on the south end of UVA's historic Lawn, directly opposite the Rotunda.  Parking is available in the Central Grounds Parking Garage, or in the lots off University Avenue at the University Corner.  Handicapped parking is available in the C1 parking lot or in designated spaces on McCormick Avenue.
