Rob Hamilton Colloquium
Rob Hamilton from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute will present a colloquium on using immersive environments (i.e. virtual reality) for music-making in on Friday, October 27th at 3:30pm in 107 Old Cabell Hall at the University of Virginia. This event is free and open to the public.
Virtual Instrument Design and Performance
As extended reality systems have become faster, more affordable and less complex to operate, artistic design practices that once required highly specialized skill sets to realize have become accessible to a new range of creatives. For musicians and musically-inclined technologists, this space offers an exciting opportunity to explore embodied gesture and motion within the context of instrument design and live performance practice. This talk focuses on the design, development and performance of a series of networked virtual reality musical instruments called Coretet, their influence on the composition of a set of musical works, and the evolution of live musical performance practice idiomatic to performing in extended reality.
Rob Hamilton
Composer and researcher Rob Hamilton explores the converging spaces between sound, music and interaction. His creative practice includes extended-reality performance works built within networked game environments, procedural music engines and mobile musical ecosystems. His research focuses on the cognitive and creative implications of sonified musical gesture and motion and the role of perceived space in the creation and enjoyment of sound and music. Dr. Hamilton received his Ph.D. from Stanford University’s Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) and currently serves as Associate Professor of Music and Media and Department Head of the Department of Arts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY.
