Department of Music

The McIntire Department of Music presents a Distinguished Major Voice Recital by soprano Sophie Wohltjen on Sunday, March 2, 2014 at 3:30pm in Old Cabell Hall. The recital is free and open to the public. A reception in the lobby will follow the performance.

Sophie will be giving this performance as a culmination of her vocal education with University of Virginia vocal instructor Pamela Beasley. She will be performing works by noteworthy composers such as Alessandro Scarlatti, W.A. Mozart, Hugo Wolf, Ernest Chausson, Irving Fine, and G.C. Menotti, and these works will be presented in collaboration with pianist Karen Dalton.  

During her four years of undergraduate study, Sophie has been a member of various ensembles, including University Singers, Chamber Singers, and the New Dominions. She currently serves as president of the University Singers and vice-president of the New Dominions, and she also co-chairs the music arts board, which has been working over a two-year period to bring composer Philip Glass to UVa. Since Sophie has declared majors in both Music and Cognitive Science, she hopes to combine these two passions after graduation by pursuing a Ph.D. in Auditory Neuroscience or Music Cognition.

This recital is supported by the Charles S. Roberts Scholarship Fund. Established in 2004 by the generosity of Mr. Alan Y. Roberts ('64) and Mrs. Sally G. Roberts, the Charles S. Roberts Scholarship Fund underwrites the private lessons and recital costs for undergraduate music majors giving a recital in their fourth year as part of a distinguished major program in music.

Old Cabell Hall is located on the south end of UVA's historic Lawn, directly opposite the Rotunda.  Parking is available in at the Central Grounds Parking Garage, in the C1 parking lot, or in the lots off University Avenue at the Corner.
