UVA Chamber Music Series - Matthew Ernst, Trumpet

The University of Virginia McIntire Department of Music presents Matthew Ernst, trumpet on Monday, February 24th, 2014 at 8pm in Old Cabell Hall.  Matthew Ernst will be joined by his wife, pianist Janna Ernst.

Matthew Ernst joined the faculty at the University of Virginia in the fall of 2013, serving as Lecturer in Trumpet.  He also performs as Principal Trumpet in the Charlottesville and University Symphony Orchestra.

A native of Massillon, OH, Matthew was appointed in 2012 as Acting Principal Trumpet with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra.  Prior to his season with the VSO, he served as Associate Principal Trumpet with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra in New Orleans, LA, for five years.  During this time, he served on the faculties of the University of New Orleans and the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts.  Earlier in his career, he worked as a freelance musician in Dallas, TX, where he played Principal Trumpet in the Las Colinas, Garland, and Arlington Symphony Orchestras as well as performed with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, with whom he still regularly plays, and the Dallas Wind Symphony.

Matthew pursued his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Michigan, where he studied with William Campbell.  He received two Master of Music degrees from Southern Methodist University—the first in Trumpet Performance, studying with Tom Booth, and the second in Wind Conducting, studying with Jack Delaney.  In addition to his degree work, he also attended Tanglewood Music Center, Pacific Music Festival, and Brevard Music Center during the summers.

Old Cabell Hall is located on the south end of UVA's historic Lawn, directly opposite the Rotunda.  Parking is available in the Central Grounds Parking Garage, or in the lots off University Avenue at the University CornerHandicapped parking is available in the C1 parking lot or in designated spaces on McCormick Avenue.
