Chamber Singers

The UVa Chamber Singers present their Fall 2008 Concert on Sunday November 23rd, at 3:00 pm in St. Paul’s Memorial Church, Charlottesville. Free of charge to the public, the concert will feature the music of Benjamin Britten.

Widely considered one of the greatest composers of the 20th century, Britten reinvigorated genres with new musical life and tremendous imagination. The program will include some of his finest choral music, including Rejoice in the Lamb (a setting of Christopher Smart’s poetry), Hymn to St. Cecilia (a setting of W.H. Auden), and Psalm 70: “Deus in Adjutorium Meum.” Led by UVa faculty conductor Michael Slon, the concert will also feature soloists from the Chamber Singers performing vocal works by Britten, accompanied by David Norfrey.

Founded in the spring of 2005, the UVa Chamber Singers are a select subset of the University Singers, and perform a wide variety of music for chamber choir ranging from early music to contemporary compositions. Recent performances have included the Palestrina Missa Brevis, Bach’s Cantata 150, Schubert’s Mass in G, Brahms’ Neue Liebeslieder Waltzes, standards by Harold Arlen and Jerome Kern, and new music by Meredith Monk and Eric Whitacre.

The concert is offered free of charge to the public. The church is located at 1700 University Ave., across from the UVa Rotunda. For more information please call the McIntire Department of Music (434) 924-3984 or visit www.stpaulsmemorialchurch.org/
