UVa Chamber Singers at the Staunton Music Festival

The UVa Chamber Singers will make their first appearance at the Staunton Music Festival, performing works by Schubert and Brahms at the Festival’s Springfest Finale.  Directed by Michael Slon, and joined by baritone Kevin McMillan and pianists Gabriel Dobner and Carsten Schmidt, the Singers perform Sunday April 25, 2010 at 4:00 pm at Staunton’s Trinity Episcopal Church.  Further information is available at the Festival’s website: http://www.stauntonmusicfestival.com/springfinale2010.shtml

Founded in 2005 and conducted by Michael Slon, the UVa Chamber Singers is a select ensemble drawn from the University Singers.  The group performs a wide variety of music for chamber choir ranging from early music to contemporary compositions.  Past performances have included the Palestrina Missa Brevis, Bach’s Cantata 150 and Cantata 61, Schubert's Mass in G, Brahms' Neue Liebeslieder Waltzes, Vivaldi’s Gloria and Magnificat, Britten’s Hymn to St. Cecilia, and Orff's Carmina Burana (where they sang the coro piccolo) with the University Singers and Charlottesville and University Symphony Orchestra. In addition, the group has performed popular standards by Harold Arlen, Jerome Kern, and Billy Joel, and new music by Meredith Monk (with the Meredith Monk Vocal Ensemble) and Eric Whitacre. 

Repertoire for the Staunton Music Festival concert will include selections from Brahms’ Liebeslieder Waltzes and Schubert’s setting of Psalm 92: Tov l'hodot l'adonai
