UVA Chamber Music Series Presents an Afternoon of Cello-Centered Masterworks

Adam Carter, Jeannette Jang, and Jeremy Thompson Perform Music by Cassadó, Brahms, Boccherini, and Schoenfield

The UVA Chamber Music Series continues on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at 3:30 p.m. with an engaging chamber music concert in Old Cabell Hall Auditorium, featuring cellist Adam Carter, violinist Jeannette Jang, and pianist Jeremy Thompson.

This thoughtfully curated program highlights the expressive power and versatility of the cello, spanning more than two centuries of music—from the elegance of the Classical era to the vibrant cross-genre energy of 20th-century America. The afternoon opens with Gaspar Cassadó’s Suite for Cello Solo, a virtuosic work inspired by Bach and Spanish folk dances, rich in rhythmic vitality and improvisatory flair.

The ensemble then performs Johannes Brahms’s Sonata for Cello and Piano No. 1 in E minor, a cornerstone of the cello repertoire. Written during Brahms’s early years in Vienna, the sonata is expansive and introspective, pairing dense contrapuntal writing with moments of lyric warmth and dramatic intensity.

Following intermission, the program turns to Luigi Boccherini’s Cello Sonata No. 6 in A major, a brilliant example of the composer’s role in elevating the cello to a solo instrument capable of both virtuosity and expressive elegance. The concert concludes with Paul Schoenfield’s Café Music, a lively and entertaining trio that blends classical technique with jazz, folk, Broadway, and Jewish musical influences—music that is as sophisticated as it is fun.

Adam Carter is principal cellist of the Charlottesville Symphony and Associate Professor of Music at the University of Virginia. A prizewinner at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, Carter has performed with orchestras throughout the United States and was a founding member of the Tarab Cello Ensemble, dedicated to contemporary music for cello octet. He holds degrees from the Eastman School of Music and the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
