Family Holiday Concerts - 2025
CHARLOTTESVILLE SYMPHONY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA AND UVA UNIVERSITY SINGERS PRESENT THE ANNUAL FAMILY HOLIDAY CONCERTS
The Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia and the UVA University Singers proudly announce the return of the beloved community tradition: the Family Holiday Concerts, taking place Saturday, December 6 at 7:30pm and Sunday, December 7 at 3:30pm in Old Cabell Hall.
This year’s concerts sparkle with festive favorites, rich choral traditions, and an exciting new highlight: internationally acclaimed saxophonist Sharel Cassity, joining the Symphony for a soulful performance of “The Christmas Song.” A dynamic force on today’s jazz scene, Sharel Cassity has appeared with icons such as Herbie Hancock, Wynton Marsalis, and the Diva Jazz Orchestra. Known for her expressive sound and effortless virtuosity, Cassity brings a warm, jazz-infused glow to one of the season’s most cherished classics. Her performance marks her debut with the Charlottesville Symphony, adding a fresh and unforgettable moment to this year’s concerts
Michael Slon, conductor of the UVA University Singers, conducts these festive performances. Slon’s dynamic direction and the ensemble’s signature blend of precision and joy help make the Family Holiday Concerts a hallmark of the season for generations of Charlottesville families.
The program features a joyful sampling of holiday works, including: “Carol of the Bells,” Bizet’s energetic “Farandole”, Anderson’s beloved “Sleigh Ride” with two guest conductors from the community, John Rutter’s arrangements of “O Holy Night” and “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” and the iconic “Hallelujah” Chorus from Handel’s Messiah.
Together, the University Singers’ powerful sound and the Symphony’s orchestral brilliance create a magical atmosphere perfect for ushering in the holiday season.
The concert is sponsored by The Office of the Provost and Vice Provost for the Arts at the University of Virginia, with season support provided by the Joseph and Robert Cornell Memorial Foundation.
