alvin hill Modular Synthesis

Alvin Hill, a technology-based artist whose work combines projection, DMX lighting, modular synthesis, physical computing, and community outreach, will be in residence at the University of Virginia in November. All events are free and open to the public.

Synthesizers can be mysterious instruments and it can be hard to know why they make the noises they do. This workshop will begin to demystify synthesis, give you some hands-on experience with a modular synth, and direct you towards resources to continue the journey on your own.

After leaving the workshop you will be able to:

- Explain what modular synthesis is and how synths generate sound

- Name many of the waveforms used in synthesis

- Use an envelope and explain what it is

- Describe modulation sources and ways we can use them

- Create a patch and jam with it
