Mixed Chamber Ensembles - UVA Chamber Music Series #3
The University of Virginia Chamber Music Series presents a faculty chamber ensemble concert on Sunday, January 25 at 3:30 p.m.in Old Cabell Hall. This intimate afternoon performance will showcase members of the UVA music faculty in a program celebrating the richness and diversity of Austrian chamber music.
Performing artists include Kelly Sulick, flute; Daniel Sender, violin; Ayn Balija, viola; Adam Carter, cello; Jiyeon Choi, clarinet; Edmond Wang, trumpet; Nathaniel Lee, trombone; and Peter Spaar, contrabass.
The program will include works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Erwin Schulhoff, and Adolf Busch.
Austrian composer Mozart, German-Swiss composer Busch, and Austria-Czech composer Schulhoff, will offer audiences a compelling journey through classical tradition and early 20th-century innovation. Mozart’s music exemplifies the elegance, clarity, and expressive balance of the Classical era, remaining a cornerstone of the chamber music repertoire. In contrast, Schulhoff’s works reflect the bold experimentation of the early 20th century, blending jazz influences, rhythmic vitality, and modernist harmonies shaped by the cultural upheavals of his time. Adolf Busch, celebrated both as a composer and one of the great violinists of the last century, brings a deeply expressive Romantic voice to the program, combining lyrical intensity with masterful craftsmanship. Together, these works illuminate Austria’s enduring influence on the evolution of chamber music, from Classical refinement to modern expression.
