The Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia continues its 40th Anniversary season on Saturday, March 21, 8:00pm, at Old Cabell Hall on the U.Va Grounds, and Sunday, March 22, 3:30pm, at Monticello High School.

(NOTE:THIS IS THE ONLY SUNDAY CONCERT DURING THE ORCHESTRA’S 2014-15 SEASON THAT TAKES PLACE AT MONTICELLO HIGH SCHOOL RATHER THAN AT THE MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. PERFORMING ARTS CENTER.)

Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21,1685.  The orchestra, conducted by Music Director Kate Tamarkin, celebrates his birthday and explores his impact in a program that includes his Concerto for Oboe, William Boyce’s Symphony No. 5 and Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 4 in E minor.

Aaron Hill, Principal Oboe with the Charlottesville Symphony, is the soloist at both performances.  Hill is an active recitalist and masterclass clinician, and serves on the music faculty at the University of Virginia.  He plays English horn with the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra and spends each summer playing Principal Oboe with the Wintergreen Festival Orchestra.  He can be heard on a Naxos recording of William Bolcom’s Songs of Innocence which won a Grammy Award for Best Classical Album.

Mr. Hill occupies the endowed Jason I. and Ellen U. Eckford Principal Oboe Chair.

Sunday’s concert is underwritten by Lee Davidson Wilder and Scott C. Davidson.

Know the Score pre-concert lectures will be presented 45 minutes before Saturday’s concert in Minor Hall and in the Forum at Monticello High School on Sunday.  Free of charge, these informative and entertaining presentations by McIntire Department ofMusic Chairman and Associate Professor of Music Richard Will offer both novice and experienced patrons a deeper appreciation of the performances.

Free parking is available in the U.Va Central Grounds Parking Garage, located on Emmet Street, on Saturday night and at Monticello High School on Sunday afternoon. Both venues are wheelchair accessible.

Tickets are $10-45 for adults and $10 for students.  U.Va students may request one complimentary ticket in advance.  Tickets may be purchased at The University of Virginia Arts Box Office, (434) 924-3376, 12:00-5:00pm Monday through Friday in the lobby of the Drama Building at 109 Culbreth Road, or on-line at www.artsboxoffice.virginia.edu.

All University of Virginia employees are entitled to a 20% discount on tickets to individual performances.  This offer does not apply to previously purchased tickets.
