"Intermedia Composition and Performance: Ideas and Practice"

What distinguishes my work as a composer is the interest to create works in which sounds and images are given equal importance and are performed in real-time. My research involves theoretical study of  correspondences between aural and visual materials as well as development of technologies that allow to mix them in expressive ways. I often play the piano interfaced with a computer through MIDI in the  Max/MSP/Jitter programming environment. This puts images and sounds  under my fingers. In the lecture I will present excerpts from my works and discuss both the process of composition and audiovisual  interpretation.

JAROSLAW KAPUSCINSKI is an intermedia composer, media artist and pianist whose work has been presented at New York's MOMA, ZKM in Karlsruhe, Museums of Modern Art Palais de Tokyo and Centre Pompidou in Paris, National Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid and many other venues. He has received awards among else at the UNESCO Film sur l'art  Festival in Paris,Video Art Festival in Locarno and Festival of New Cinema and New Media in Montréal. Kapuscinski graduated from Academy of Music in Warsaw and University of California, San Diego. Currently he is Assistant Professor of composition at the Department of Music, Stanford University and directs Intermedia Performance Lab at CCRMA.
