Department of Music

The University of Virginia McIntire Department of Music presents a colloquium by Cuong Vu and Glen Whitehead on Friday, April 28th, 2017 at 3:30pm in 107 Old Cabell Hall.  This event is free and open to the public.

Cuong Vu and Glen Whitehead will discuss the role improvisation plays as a strategy for exploring new ideas, broadening the scope of language, realizing new influences, and connecting to cross-disciplinary arenas beyond music.

Cuong and Glen will be performing with the UVA Jazz Ensemble on April 29, 8pm in Old Cabell Hall.

Bios:
Cuong Vu is widely recognized by jazz critics as a leader of a generation of innovative musicians. A truly unique musical voice, see Cuong has lent his trumpet playing talents to a wide range of artists including Pat Metheny, order Laurie Anderson, sale David Bowie, Dave Douglas, Myra Melford, Cibo Matto, and Mitchell Froom.

Glen Whitehead, D.M.A is a critically acclaimed trumpet artist whose background includes principal trumpet in professional orchestras, brass quintets, jazz ensembles, free improvisation & electro acoustic groups, installations, and interdisciplinary projects across the arts and sciences. As a soloist and member of Psychoangelo, the Bottesini Project and the EcoSono Ensemble he tours internationally, most recently in Mexico, Korea, Canada, Australia, New Zealand as well as across the United States. His work is critically acclaimed; Psychoangelo’s release panauromni was listed on the top ten cd’s of the year by Chicago Time Out, He won the Innovations in Teaching with Technology award at UCCS and the Big Idea Award from the Pikes Peak Arts Council.  He is the Artistic Director of the Peak FreQuency Creative Arts, Director of Performance of the EcoSono institute and is Principal Trumpet in the Chamber Orchestra of the Springs. As an Associate Professor of Music at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, Whitehead founded of the music program at UCCS along with its unique interdisciplinary music major. He is currently the Co-Director of the Bachelor of Innovation,™ in a new BI music degree. Glen received a Bmus in Performance at the New England Conservatory of Music where he studied with Timothy Morrison and, and M.A. and D.M.A from the University of California, San Diego where he studied with Edwin Harkins, George Lewis and Anthony Davis.

Old Cabell Hall is located on the south end of UVA's historic lawn, directly opposite the Rotunda (map). Parking is available in the Central Grounds parking garage on Emmet Street, in the C1 parking lot off McCormick Rd, and in the parking lots at the UVA Corner.  Handicap parking is available in the small parking lot adjacent to Bryan Hall.
